Person changing a flat tire

Part of your Hyundai service checklist will be addressing issues with your tires. But if you need to change a flat tire on the road or at home, you need both the right tools and to follow the proper steps in order. That’s why the Jenkins Hyundai of Jacksonville team has assembled this guide to changing a flat tire so you know what to do.

What You’ll Need

In order to change a flat tire, you’ll need a lug wrench that fits the lug nuts on your wheels; the exact size will be listed in your owner’s manual. You’ll also need a jack to lift the car up and a safe place to work on your car. While they aren’t strictly necessary, you may want some wheel blocks to keep your wheels in place or warning lights to alert other drivers that you’re changing a flat.

Changing the Flat Tire

Prepare the Vehicle

  • Make sure your vehicle is turned off and in park.
  • If you have wheel blocks or chocks, place them in front of or behind the tires to prevent rolling.

Lift the Vehicle

  • Position the jack under your car’s designated lift point.
  • Pump or crank the jack until the flat tire is lifted off the ground.

Remove the Flat Tire

  • Loosen the lug nuts in a star or crisscross pattern while the tire is off the ground.
  • Once they’re loose, remove each lug nut completely and set them aside safely.
  • Carefully pull the flat tire off the wheel hub.

Mount the Spare Tire

  • Align the spare tire with the wheel bolts and slide it into place.
  • Replace the lug nuts, tightening each one slightly in a star pattern to secure the wheel evenly.

Lower and Secure

  • Slowly lower the vehicle back to the ground with the jack.
  • Once the tire touches the ground, fully tighten the lug nuts in the same star pattern.
  • Remove the jack and wheel chocks — you’re ready to drive safely again.
